A tap-to-call phone number lets someone on a phone call you with one tap instead of copying the number by hand. It’s one of the smallest changes you can make to a local business website, and one of the most useful. Here’s how to do it on the most common website builders.
How a tap-to-call link works
It’s a normal link that starts with tel: instead of https://, followed by your full number with the country code and no spaces or brackets. In Canada and the US the country code is +1. For example:
<a href="tel:+19055550142">(905) 555-0142</a>
Visitors still see the number formatted normally; only the link behind it uses the plain version.
How to check if yours works
- On your phone, open your website and tap the number. Your phone app should open with the number filled in.
- On a computer, hover over the number. If it’s a link, your browser shows
tel:at the bottom of the window. - Check every place the number appears: header, homepage, contact page and footer.
WordPress
- Open the page in the editor and select your phone number.
- Click the link button (or press Ctrl+K, or Cmd+K on a Mac).
- Type
tel:+1followed by your 10-digit number, for exampletel:+19055550142, and press Enter. - Update the page and test it on your phone.
If the number is in your header or footer, it’s usually edited in Appearance → Editor (block themes) or in your theme’s header settings, not on the page itself.
Wix
- In the Wix Editor, select the text box and highlight the number.
- Click the link icon in the text settings.
- Choose the phone number option and enter your number.
- Publish and test on your phone.
Squarespace
- Edit the page and highlight the number in a text block.
- Click the link icon.
- Type
tel:+1and your number, for exampletel:+19055550142, and apply. - Save and test on your phone.
GoDaddy Website Builder
Buttons and links in GoDaddy’s builder can usually be set to call a phone number. Select the button or link, look for a phone option in its link settings, and enter your number. If your version doesn’t offer one, use a link of tel:+1 followed by your number. Then publish and test on your phone.
Common mistakes
- Spaces, brackets or dashes inside the
tel:link itself. Keep the link as plain digits. - Leaving out the +1 country code.
- The number only exists inside an image or logo, so it can’t be tapped or read by Google.
- Different numbers in different places on the site, or a different number than your Google Business Profile.
- The number only appears in the footer. Put a “Call” button in the header on phones too.
