If you don’t count calls and quote requests from your website, you can’t tell whether a change helped. The good news: you only need three numbers a month, and the tools are free.
The three numbers worth tracking
- Visitors: how many people came to your site.
- Taps on your phone number: how many tried to call from the site.
- Quote requests: how many sent your form.
Divide calls plus quote requests by visitors and you have a simple conversion rate to compare month to month.
Visitors: Google Analytics 4
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is free. Once its tag is on your site, it counts visitors and page views automatically. Most website builders have a setting where you paste your GA4 measurement ID.
Phone taps: a click event
GA4 doesn’t count taps on phone links by default. You add a small event that fires when someone taps a tel: link, either with Google Tag Manager or a few lines of code, and then mark that event as a key event in GA4 so it shows up in your reports. Your phone number has to be a tap-to-call link first. How to make it tap-to-call.
A tap isn’t always a completed call; some people tap and hang up. If you need exact call counts, a call tracking service can give you a forwarding number, but use it carefully so your website and Google listing still show one consistent number.
Quote requests: form submissions
- Most form plugins save every submission in your website dashboard. That count alone is useful.
- To see them in GA4, fire an event when the form is sent successfully, for example on the thank-you message or thank-you page, and mark it as a key event.
- Test it by sending yourself a request and checking it appears.
Calls from Google Maps and Search
Calls made straight from your Google Business Profile don’t touch your website. Check them in your profile’s performance section. What to check on your profile.
A simple monthly routine
- First of the month: write down visitors, phone taps, quote requests and Google profile calls.
- Compare with last month.
- Change one thing at a time, so you know what made the difference.
